Miko lay on the roof of the factory at Nasir's side, holding a gun he had made and aiming it at his papa. Hector had not seen the sight move up his chest and settle at his throat and he continued walking towards the factory.
Nasir disparagingly scolded, “You always aim for the throat, Miko.” He placed his hand on Miko's rifle and gently lowered it so the sight settled over Hector's heart.
“I like the throat.” He glanced at Nasir, then smiled and turned the sight off. Nasir went down without him while Miko took apart the rifle, barely containing his excitement over seeing Hector again. Miko had lacquered his hair, which accomplished very little, and he bounded down the stairs of the roof to greet him.
Hector had aged rapidly, but Miko knew he had changed a lot too, and they embraced each other for several minutes without a word.
“Mikolaj, I have missed you, my boy. I hope you minded Nasir.”
“He's a pleasure,” Nasir said, roughing up Miko's hair and giving them a moment of privacy.
“How are you? You look well.”
Miko had missed him terribly and he knew Hector's visit would be brief, but he felt eager and anxious for Hector to get to the point. “I am.”
Hector squeezed his arms and laughed. “You have gotten big. He put you to work.”
“Not yet.”
“Yes,” Hector said with a nod. “It has come so quickly.”
“It has been eight months,” Miko said. And he'd felt ready for the last three of them.
Hector waved his hand dismissively and led Miko back to Nasir, gripping his bicep and laughing to himself. “This should be an easy one.” He took an envelope out of his inside coat pocket and held it out to Nasir. Then he reconsidered, and gave it to Miko instead. “It's in Lisbon, you will not have to go far.”
Miko opened the envelope, being wholly unimpressed with the cash as he'd seen more than enough of that before. He'd never been given a photograph of their victims though, and he looked at that with considerably more interest. The man looked normal. Just a regular person. Miko thought about what Nasir had said about bad people, and he did not allow himself to ask Hector what this man had done even though he'd always asked before, when the marks were not his own.
Nasir asked instead, giving Miko a wink.
Hector hesitated, glancing between them before saying, “Senhor Álvares frequented brothels, and brought something home to his wife which left her barren. Then he shared it with their adopted daughter.” Miko immediately looked to Nasir, but his face remained emotionless. “You may kill him however you wish, as long as it does not look like vengeance for her. Leave the body where it will be found.”
“Yes, Papa.” Miko hugged him again, the envelope gripped against Hector's back.
Hector heaved a sigh. “They grow up so fast.”
